Officials with the Marshall County Coroner’s Office reported early Thursday that two people died near Arab, roughly 60 miles northeast of Birmingham, as a consequence of flash flooding. A 4-year-old daughter was one of the fatalities, whose body was discovered late Wednesday. An 18-year-old woman’s body was discovered at 7 a.m. local time on Thursday.

Since Oct. 3, Birmingham has received more than an inch of rain every day. As further heavy rain poured on Wednesday, the National Weather Service issued a rare flash flood warning for Birmingham and Pelham, Alabama, which lasted until Thursday morning. There were numerous water rescues and flooded highways reported.

According to the  Fire Department, it received over 280 requests for service and saved 82 people from their homes, with another 15-20 people rescued from automobiles.

On Wednesday, Birmingham received 2.76 inches of rain, bringing the city’s total rainfall for the month to more than 7.6 inches. During the month of October, Birmingham usually receives only 3.34 inches of rain. “We’ve had multiple water rescues, people stranded in cars who have been saved by fire departments and police departments, and we’ve got damage reports of trees on houses and trees on roadways,

Several feet of water flooded roadways in the southern Alabama communities of Brewton and East Brewton, according to the Associated Press. Several businesses in the vicinity were also flooded.

Rainfall totaled 2 to 8 inches throughout areas of the Southeast over the past week. Unofficial rain gauges in Panama City Beach, Florida, and Hoover and Pelham, Alabama, both south of Birmingham, reported more than a foot of rain from Monday to Thursday morning.

The threat of heavy rain will gradually shift eastward during the rest of the week, according to climate experts, while eyes must also turn to an area of interest just off the Atlantic coast for potential tropical development.

“On Thursday, a plume of rich, tropical moisture in the Southeast will begin to slowly pivot eastward,” Meteorologist said.

The Gulf of Mexico has been sending moisture north and the Atlantic Ocean has been sending moisture west. Rainfall has been aided by the slow-moving and repeated nature of the rain, as well as two zones of tropical moisture.

“On Thursday, showers and thunderstorms with the potential for torrential rain and floods will move into the southern Appalachians, including parts of northern Georgia,” Babinski warned.

The rain’s strength will be amplified by additional lifting induced by parts of the higher terrain,” Metrologist warned.

Because air cannot pass through the mountains, it must rise. As the air temperature rises, it cools and condenses into clouds, resulting in more rain than at lower elevations.
